Wikipedia banned, and not just in China

While Wikipedia is continuing to be banned in China, the history department of Middlebury College, and professors at UCLA, and the University of Pennsylvania have come out and said that they will be banning Wikipedia being used as a primary source. Although their ban is not complete as they do not ban using it for background information.

Neil Walters, a professor at one of the universities that have banned Wikipedia, Middlebury College; has stated that some research assignments he had previously collected contained vandalism found in some Wikipedia articles. Now that was stupid on the students behalf.

See Universities ban Wikipedia as primary source (Wikinews).

This “ban” is very much in like with Wikipedia’s own rules, where it is accepted that Wikis do not count as reliable sources for Wikipedia articles. Why should universities have a more relaxed policy on sources than Wikipedia itself?

That Wikinews article was shoddy work; if you read the MSNBC piece closely, Middlebury is the only one with a department-wide ban. It’s just individual professors at UCLA, Penn and other places. I’ve updated Wikinews accordingly.

I have now updated my post, thanks for pointing out Wikinews mistake. I should have checked the sources.
