Report: Wikipedia usage

A report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project has come out with the statistics on the usage of Wikipedia. The most of Wikipedia’s readers are those who are a white male, graduated from college, are aged between 18-29, with an annual income of over $75,000 and have a broadband connection.

While only one group of people made it to 50% (college grads), the statistics are still very, very impressive.

One of the most surprising statistic to come out was the usage of Wikipedia to look for information for those aged over 65, at 26%. That percentage is higher than people with high school diplomas with those people only at 22%.

Although the report does indicate that the higher level of education, the more likely you are to use Wikipedia to look for information. Which is weird because those with higher levels of education should know that they need to treat Wikipedia’s information with more caution.

The same report also ranks the top ten educational sites by the share of traffic, Wikipedia ranks highest (24.33%), right after Yahoo! Answers (4.23%).

Many of us will see that Google likes Wikipedia because of the ranks it nicely gives it in the first page of results and, with Hitwise data, those rankings results in 50% of all Wikipedia’s traffic.

The full report is here in PDF format, http://www.pewinternet.org/pdfs/PIP_Wikipedia07.pdf.
