Google loves Wikipedia a little too much

As everyone probably knows, Google ranks Wikipedia pages very favourably for various reasons, which resulted in a very embarrassing incident for both Google and Wikipedia occurring.Doing a Google search for ‘George Washington’ results in the White House biography and the Wikipedia page respectively. Search Engine Land has shown that when they did a search for George Washington, the page description stated that “George Washington Had a shit on a stick and then told people that it was ok to have unprotected sex…”A search for George Washington on Google now results in the proper version showing up.

Because of the very nature of Wikipedia, allowing anyone to edit their pages, vandalism is a huge threat to Wikipedia and the validity of it. And since Google ranks Wikipedia nicely in the top pages of search results, vandalism gets indexed.

Google Search Result. Thanks Danny Sullivan.

Thanks to Danny Sullivan for the image. Search Engine Land has more information.

yea.. you would think given the prominence of wikipedia in their search results, google would bother with a special case for wikipeida domains… using a ‘moving average’ representation of the page. ie dramatic short lived edits would not be indexed…or maybe use some page similarity metric to recent page edit validity… or if nothing else flag recent edits with profanity 😛

I seldom drop remarks, but i did a few searching and wound up here Google loves
Wikipedia a little too much Gabriel Pollard.
And I actually do have a couple of questions for you
if it’s allright. Is it only me or does it appear like some of the responses look as if they are coming from brain dead visitors? 😛 And, if you are posting at additional online sites, I would like to follow anything new you have to post. Could you list of every one of all your social sites like your linkedin profile, Facebook page or twitter feed?

Nice blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it from somewhere?
A theme like yours with a few simple adjustements would really make my blog
jump out. Please let me know where you got your design. Bless you
